Tell us what attracted you to the KPI and becoming KPI Certified.

About five years ago, as a corporate leader, I was grappling with leading a reorganization and the continuous pendulum I noticed over time between centralizing the function to be efficient and decentralizing our efforts to be closer to the consumers and the business units. The language and the ability to see and integrate the dynamics of the overall system drew me to polarity work. In coaching, we often work with leaders who are navigating nuanced situations. The KPI offers a framework to help clients see both sides of a polarity. The certification process deepened my understanding of guiding clients through this delicate dance.

How have you used the KPI in your work?

I use polarities and the KPI in my coaching practice to add more texture and energy to leadership. It is like adding dimensions to adapt to increasingly changing contexts. For example, in a recent engagement with a client, the KPI helped them recognize that their struggle was not about choosing tactics or strategies but navigating the generative conversation between the two. This realization was transformative, leading to a wide opening of possibilities.

What are your top tips for a powerful debrief?

“Debriefs” begins with creating a safe space for open reflection. What is the most helpful trail to engage with the client? Do we engage from the whole and dive into the forest to find what is in there, or do we start with the specific parts, look at the connections, and create the whole?

How do your clients receive it? Any noticing or reactions you can share with us?

Clients often have an “aha” moment when they see their polarities mapped out. It’s like holding up a mirror that reflects not just one side of the story but the entire room. One client recently said it was like being handed a compass after wandering in the woods. They felt the energy field and the tensions at play.

Leadership KPI or Human KPI? If you had to pick oneā€”and why?

Often the Leadership KPI, yet It depends on what is there. Leadership often sets the tone for an organization’s culture, and the Leadership KPI offers a lens to examine and balance polarities that are pivotal to driving growth.

Are there any polarities you are working on at the moment? How’s that going?

I am dancing with the polarities of Inquiry and Action compiled with Whole and Parts. It is a fascinating dance. Compounding polarities make for an interesting gift for nuances and energy exchange. It is going!

Could you give one piece of advice to someone considering using the KPI in their next program or coaching engagement?

Start with curiosity and patience. Encourage clients to view polarities as ongoing dynamics to discover and navigate. This mindset shift can open new possibilities and pathways for growth.

Is there anything else you want to share or ask practitioners?

I am curious to hear how other practitioners use the polarities beyond the individual to examine an organizational culture and strategic intent.
